COVENTRY has been named as one of the most Heritage-Rich cities in England, new research has shown.

New research by British delivery service Evri has analysed the number of heritage plaques in each British city, with Coventry having the sixth most with 142.

The blue plaque scheme started in London by English Heritage, honouring actors, writers and prime ministers.

Heritage plaques have since moved into the rest of the country highlighting historical landmarks.

Coventry’s plaques honour significant figures like inventor and aviator Sir Frank Whittle, Victorian era actress Dame Ellen Terry and musician Delia Derbyshire.

The plaques in each city reflect what each area is known for, with Coventry’s honouring its rich heritage of watches, with key plaques including Smith & Sons Balance Works and Henry Westrap Watch Manufacturer.

Plaques can be found mounted to walls and historic buildings.

London was shown to have the most heritage plaques with 987, while Liverpool finished second with 295.

Coventry also finished behind Norwich, Leeds and Brighton and Hove in the standings.
