Coventry Rugby star pens rap for kit launch

COVENTRY rugby star David Opoku has broken new ground by writing and performing a rap track to mark the launch of the clubs new kit.

Academy winger Opoku penned ‘Stepped In, Stepped Out’ and it was recorded through a two-minute video by the club’s media manager Dan Lewis.

The video was shot in one day around Gosford Street in the recording studio and at the club and features players donning the new kit, which offers a fresh take on the club’s traditional blue-and-white hoops.

Opoku has been making songs for around three years and has been writing his own music since he was in sixth form at Coventry Bluecoat School.

The rapper and singer said ‘Stepped In, Stepped Out’ came about after a coincidental conversation with Dan Lewis and teammate Jimmy Martin.

He said: “I had already made a song about Coventry and when Dan and Jimmy heard it they loved it and straight away asked if we could get together and do something with it as it fitted very well with Cov Rugby.

“I then did a remix and incorporated rugby elements within the song by writing some new lyrics. I hope the fans like it as it was a fun thing to do.

“I start with a melody then think of a topic and follow the storyline and see where it takes me.

“I have loads of songs but while I’m focusing on my rugby I’m not doing much with them for now.”
