Coventry school children hold performance to learn about the environment

Ryan Smith 15th Apr, 2022

OVER 300 children were welcomed to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School for a specially written musical to teach the youngsters about the environment.

Students from seven other schools came to enjoy ‘Mousike Ensemble’, which combines music and learning and sees the children perform songs, dance and poetry based around the environment.

St Gregory’s, St Patrick’s, Corpus Christi and Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School’s joined the event, along with St Anne’s, St Augustine’s and St Elizabeth’s.

The annual event has been running since 2001 and is linked to the National Curriculum.

The performance focuses on a different subject every year, but this has been the first ensemble since 2019 due to Covid.

The production was written by Sacred Heart’s executive principal Paul Madia along with EmbedIT director Chris Smith.

Those in attendance came dressed for the occasion, and their performances took inspiration from environmental activist Greta Thunberg by focusing on topics including the ocean, recycling and bees.

EmbedIT is a Midlands-based company which helps schools to embed the latest technology into classrooms.

Sacred Heart was one of four schools to host the event over two days.

Paul Madia said: “It was absolutely fantastic to reignite Mousike Ensemble.

“It was a great way to introduce different genres of music including rap, ballads, rock and performing in the round.

“Each school took part in the collaboration and was also invited to perform a school showcase which involved the children composing their own pieces of music, dance or performance.

“It promotes a real sense of musical fun and demonstrates the arts are also core subjects which help develop the whole child.”
