Coventry schoolchildren raise £7k in century old charity tradition

SCHOOL children from Coventry and Warwickshire have put their efforts together to raise £7,200 for vulnerable people as part of a century old tradition.

On Tuesday, May 22, children from 25 schools gathered at Holy Family Church in Coventry to present their donations to Midland social care charity, Father Hudson’s Care.

The kids raised money throughout Lent, through bake sales, non-uniform days, sponsored events and collection boxes.

They presented their gifts at the church in a Mass celebrated by Bishop William Kenney.

Students from Holy Family Primary School, Holbrooks, also performed during the ceremony.

Bishop William said: “Much of what is good in life we do together – as a family, as a school, and as friends.

“And during Lent they as a group supported others. They were happy to be part of a group that did something, that helped others who are in need.”

Andy Quinn, the chief executive of Father Hudson’s Care, said: “Much of what we do at Father Hudson’s helps bring people together who are alone – they may be refugees, asylum seekers, homeless people, older people, disabled people or those experiencing difficulties. No-one should be excluded from a joyful life, and that’s what we do. You are part of a great thing in doing this work. Thank you.”

Father Hudson’s Care works across the five counties of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, helping people at their time of need.

In the period before Easter, children from around 200 schools across the area took part in fundraising activities.

This is a tradition going back to the early part of the twentieth century, when children started collecting coins for Father Hudson’s.
