COVENTRY’S Barr’s Hill School now has a £6.5million new teaching block giving year seven pupils their own ‘mini-school’ to help ease the transition into secondary education.

The new building, known as ‘The Bridge’, is two storeys and houses seven modern classrooms.

Existing buildings have also been remodelled to accommodate the school’s upcoming expansion which will see its science department being extended and refurbished.

There will also be new classroom spaces, improved sports and gym facilities, outdoor play areas and another dining space.

Barr’s Hill offers 780 places for children between 11 and 16 and has capacity for 140 sixth-form students.

Its last set of exam results saw it place in the top one per cent nationally.

Expansion plans will see the school provides 11,000 places in five years.

Barr’s Hill headteacher Chris Jupp said: “The new spaces are transformational, they offer students exceptional learning environments to go alongside their exceptional achievements.

“It was wonderful to see the amazed faces of the year seven students going into The Bridge for the first time, they could not believe it.”

Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu, Coventry City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, added: “The opening of these new teaching facilities is not just great news for the staff and students here at Barr’s Hill, it is great news for Coventry, as the young people who study in these classrooms will hopefully go on to take our city forward.

“The lessons they learn here and the sense of pride and responsibility they take in their new facilities will be building blocks for their future.”
