Coventry schools to encourage next generation of lifesavers

LOCAL schools are being called on to join forces to help encourage the next generation of life savers.

St John Ambulance, the nation’s leading first aid charity, is urging schools in Warwickshire to work together and take part of its Let’s Teach a Generation First Aid Relay.

The scheme will see trainers from St John Ambulance go into schools to deliver lifesaving First Aid training.

Pupils at the school will then have two weeks to pass the first aid baton on by raising enough funds for a neighbouring school to receive the same training.

Nick Pitt, Regional Schools Training Co-ordinator for St John Ambulance in the West Midlands, said the ‘exciting initiative’ is the first of its kind the charity has launched.

He added: “Schools can raise money in any way they choose – this is all about joining together by ‘paying it forward’ for another school to benefit from potentially lifesaving training.

“All young people should have the opportunity to learn first aid and we hope that this will provide schools with the perfect opportunity to help their pupils do just that.

“We want to build a generation of life savers who can, one day, make the difference between a life saved and a life lost.”

The initiative follows research undertaken by St John Ambulance which showed nearly 58 per cent of children in the West Midlands region have no life saving knowledge at all – leaving them without the skills to deal with basic emergency situations.

The campaign will kick off in September and will run until next July, with schools interested in taking part being encouraged to telephone 0121 237 3879 or email [email protected]
