SCIENTISTS at the University of Warwick’s WMG will team up with experts in Ukraine to develop artificial intelligence (AI) that will help treat those wounded by shrapnel.
The WMG scientists and the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (NURE) will develop the software to help medics understand which patients need immediate treatment for life-threatening wounds which are not obvious to the naked eye.
The technology enables users to feed CT scan data into a computer programme to help medics make quicker decisions on who needs the most immediate treatment.
Experts at WMG will be creating replicas of human anatomy and shrapnel wounds using 3D imaging.
These ‘phantom models’ will act as test objects which computer science experts can use to calibrate their technology and AI programme.
The project was one of 33 discussed at the House of Lords last Wednesday to mark the first anniversary of the twinning scheme, which allows universities around the world to support their Ukrainian counterparts.
Prof Mark Williams from WMG said: “A huge problem for medics dealing with many severely injured people at the same time is the rapid identification of life-threatening injuries so they can prioritise who needs emergency surgery soonest.
“As well as being useful in other emergencies such as earthquakes, the research can also apply to doctors in trauma wards – already stretched by pressures on the NHS – who need to assess patients quickly.
“It is very exciting to be able to bring our expertise to deliver a rapid solution to such an important humane need.”
