Coventry should be 'world class' IT hub, say city Conservatives

CONSERVATIVE Councillors in Coventry want the city to become a world class hub for IT start up and technology based companies.

They want the city to emulate Silicon Valley in California or Box Park in London making the city the UK’s number one destination for IT start ups and technology companies.

Conditions in Coventry are right, say councillors, for Coventry to benefit from a technology revolution.

They cite factors such as a lower cost of living and relatively low property values in the city – factors favourable to many budding entrepreneurs.

In fact, a recent survey found that 40 per cent of start-ups had already left London due to the cost of living.

They believe the Government’s promise of £1bn to improve digital infrastructure across the country could be the catalyst for change in Coventry.

The Council has recently set out a vision for improved digital connectivity across the city and unveiled a range of proposals to improve its own efficiency.

However, Coun Gary Ridley, who sits on the Council’s digital strategy task and finish group believes that it could lead to the start of something much bigger.

He’s received the support of Conservative Leader, Coun John Blundell and they’ll submit a motion to councillors on December 6.

If approved by councillors it could make Coventry a haven for tech based companies leading to a whole new industry in the city.

Speaking ahead of the motion Coun Ridley said: “Coventry is ideally placed to take advantage of a technology revolution that works for everyone.

“We’ve got two universities and several specialised IT firms here already.

“We can offer affordable living to budding entrepreneurs and we’re well connected being right at the heart of the country.

“There’s clearly a lot of work to be done but this motion will set out a vision for our city and confirm our commitment to succeed.

“It’ll be a massive challenge too requiring the Council, Government and other partners to come together – but I know it’s achievable.”

The Leader of Coventry Conservatives, Coun John Blundell, is backing the plan and added: “With a commitment from the UK Government to invest £1bn in digital infrastructure we’re well placed to build on what’s been done already.

“With the right vision and political will we can make Coventry the number one destination for IT start ups and tech firms from right across the UK.

“With the regeneration of the City Centre becoming a reality there’s a great chance to expand this growing industry in our city.”
