Coventry singer and community champion on New Year's honours list

Coventry Editorial 2nd Jan, 2024   0

A COVENTRY singer turned community champion has been honoured with an OBE for her charity work in King Charles III’s New Year’s Honours list.

Sandra Godley has been recognised for her charitable service to the community in Coventry.

Sandra is a trustee of Feed the Hungry and she has travelled across the world, including working with orphans in Kenya to write a song, ‘I Am Me.’

She is currently a Patron for Highly Sprung Performance, the UK’s leading physical theatre, and an ambassador for AtaLoss and The Belgrade Theatre.

Her single ‘My Darling’, released in August 2021, raised more than £1,000 for local charities ‘Surviving Bereavement’, ‘Molly Olly’s Wishes’ and ‘Coventry and Warwickshire Mind’ to support them through the pandemic.

And she is a MOBO-nominated musician as well as a TV and radio presenter.

She said the award meant a huge amount to her and said she hoped to be an example to people and inspire them to get busy and help others.

Cathryn Lee, who is the CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society, has also received an OBE for services to charity.

She said: “I’m honoured to be recognised in the New Year Honours List.

“I have been very lucky to spend my career leading amazing teams to deliver deep and meaningful impact for people who need support – including here at Alzheimer’s Society.

“This award is as much about their achievements as mine.

“Some of it has been tough but most of it has been unbelievably rewarding.”

Fellow Coventrian Prof Carol-Ann Doyle was given an OBE for services to Nurse Education for her efforts during her time as head of school for nursing and midwifery at Birmingham City University.

Paula Deas, who was the deputy CEO of Coventry and Warwickshire LEP before it disbanded last year, was given an MBE for services to the community in the West Midlands.

And Robert Arnott was awarded a BEM for services to the community in Coventry.
