Coventry Stampede wheelchair rugby player looks to help other amputees

A COVENTRY disability sports player is looking to help those who have suffered from limb loss after qualifying for the Limbless Association’s Volunteer Visitor Programme.

Coventry Stampede wheelchair rugby star Martin Taylor has been an amputee for 23 years and said he faced many challenges without support.

And now, having undergone the rigorous selection process to get his new role, he aims to share his experiences with and support other amputees.

All limbless association volunteers are at least two years post-amputation and share their experience of limb loss, supporting those who are either pre- or post-amputation.

They offer advice to those going through the amputation process and listen to their concerns on everyday issues they may be facing.

After wanting to get active three years after his amputation, Martin achieved his ACU road race licence and in 2007 returned to banger racing for the Coventry Avengers.

Ten years ago he began playing in the British Wheelchair Basketball league for Coventry Crusaders and in 2019 discovered wheelchair rugby.

Martin said he wanted to use his new role to promote the limbless association’s mission statement that ‘no amputee need cope alone.’

Coventry Crusade head coach Mandip Sehmi added: “Martin is a great asset to our team.

“He is a warm, friendly person and his selfless nature makes him perfect for his new role with the Limbless Association.

“I’m certain he will help others who have gone through these life-changing moments, gain confidence and become active in their lives again, and I hope some of them will be encouraged to join our team.”
