COVENTRY student Vedika Bedi has been offered a career opportunity with technology firm Siemens after showcasing her talents at a 48-hour engineering ‘hackathon’.

The 20-year-old was part of a team who finished as runners-up in the Sir William Siemens Challenge, which looks to find the best emerging engineering talent across the UK.

It also gives youngsters a chance to experience what it is like to work for a major engineering company.

The students were tasked with building and programming an mechanical device which brought data to life from Mindsphere, Siemens’ industrial cloud-based operating system.

Vedika was part of Team Vectron, which created a miniature version of the area where the competition was held, using model people to represent increased footfall and carbon dioxide levels.

It also had an LED array which changed depending on carbon monoxide levels, and a rotating display to show the time of day.

The team has been offered an internship or graduate opportunities with Siemens’ Digital Industries, Smart Infrastructure, and mobility businesses.

Vedika said the hackathon was a great experience which helped with her time management skills.
