CITY students jetted off to South Africa last week to share their knowledge of building and racing electric vehicles.

Members of the University of Warwick’s formula student team shared their expertise which will be critical to launching an all-electric motorsport competition for youngsters across the continent, based on the UK model of the tournament.

Six South African universities are already on board for the series, named Formula Student Africa, and it is hoped the competition will help drive the electrification of transport across the continent.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the University of Warwick’s WMG will also be looking to collaborate with research into EV batteries.

Formula student aims to develop young engineers with the ultimate aim being to design and race a sports car.

This year’s UK competition will be taking place at Silverstone.

In 2018, the University became the first team to enter an all-electric racing car into the UK edition of formula student.

Warwick’s formula student team is made up of 120 members including more than 40 women.

Warwick Racing’s team principal Prem Gill, who is also a second-year Mechanical Engineering student, said: “The visit to South Africa is a huge milestone and aligns with my own aspirations to drive positive change in the industry and make a meaningful impact in the world.

“It’s an opportunity to expand our knowledge, network with industry professionals, and showcase our innovative ideas.”
