A BRAND new Subway sandwich, designed by Coventry students, has been released in stores across the region.

The Spicy Rafter sub was created by Merveille Bahati, Maja Perzanowska, Nikesh Jobanputra and George Briers from The Blue Coat School and Music College.

The sandwich is made with a mouth-watering mix of turkey breast, peppered cheese, peppers, jalapenos, lettuce, onions and BBQ sauce on Italian white bread.

The ‘Spicy Rafter’ Sub was the result of Subway’s design a sub challenge which asked budding entrepreneurs from schools, colleges and sixth forms from across the UK to design and market a new sandwich.

The winning design, developed by the team of students from The Blue Coat School and Music College, can now be enjoyed across the region but will only be sold for a limited time.

In total, over 80 teams took part but the Coventry students beat off stiff competition, winning first place after an exciting Dragon’s Den style pitch in front of a judging panel at St Andrew’s Stadium in Birmingham.

Maja Perzanowska, who was a part of the winning team, said they were really excited to see the official launch.

She added: “It’s amazing to see all of our hard work come to life and can’t believe that it’s actually going on sale throughout the region.

“On the judging day we were third to deliver our presentation and we were very, very nervous.

“We didn’t know how well we had done and it was a shock when we were announced as the winners.”

Maja said they had so much fun throughout the whole of the competition.

“We’ve worked really hard to put what we’ve learnt on our course, especially in relation to marketing into practice,” she added.

Jennifer Steele, the school’s head of business and economics, said  the project gave the pupils a great practical learning experience and the opportunity to work with a well-recognised business.
