Coventry University opens new £33million campus in the city

Coventry University has officially opened the doors to its new £33million state-of-the-art campus in the city.

CU Coventry, part of the Coventry University Group, has transformed the former BT building, in Mile Lane, into a cutting-edge learning environment for its students and staff.

The modern building includes teaching rooms, IT suites, engineering and science labs, a mock court, media studio, a library and a café, as well as extensive breakout areas.

The student experience and the institute’s employability model are at the heart of the building’s design, with a number of rooms set out to immerse students into an industry environment to prepare them for the world of work.

Giving students and staff access to some of the very latest technology was also a top priority, with the building including 83 inch teaching screens in all classrooms as well as state-of-the-art design and camera equipment, advanced electro-mechanical technology, modern science labs and innovative teaching experiences.

Energy-efficient features including smart lighting, electric car charging points, improved bike storage and showers to encourage cycling, and modern boilers and chillers have also been incorporated.

Planning for the contemporary campus, designed by Birmingham-based Associated Architects, began in August 2017 and Willmott Dixon started building work in April last year. It has now officially opened its doors to students and staff.

Jackie Mathers, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor of CU Coventry, said: “We are very excited to open our incredible new campus.

“There has been a massive investment into the site and this is reflected in the cutting-edge learning environment which we are now able to offer our students.

“We have some excellent features including the very latest technology, flexible working space, extensive breakout areas which can be used for teaching and study, outdoor space and high quality catering facilities.

“Our modern facilities also make us more attractive to businesses and industry experts visiting the site to deliver guest lectures and engage with students.

“CU Coventry’s flexible learning model means that our students study mornings or afternoons, making higher education more accessible to those who have other commitments.

“It also means that students are able to commit to employment, with many getting jobs in the industry they plan to go into after graduating, which is fantastic for the region’s economy.

“Our new campus means that we will continue to support the positive student experience throughout their time with us, and ensure they are in the best possible position to progress following graduation.”
