Coventry vigil to be held to remember female victims of Violence

Coventry Editorial 7th Nov, 2022   0

A VIGIL remembering women who have been killed by men over the past year will be held in Shelton Square on Saturday, November 19.

The vigil has been organised by a group of Coventry women and will take place between 9am and 5pm.

The event has been organised for the Saturday before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which takes place on November 25.

Several local councillors will be among those reading speeches at the vigil and the names of each of the women who have been killed will be read out throughout the day as a mark of respect and remembrance.

There will also be a performance from musician Nehanda at midday and a poetry reading from a woman about her surviving abuse will take place at 10am.

Information and support services will be available at the vigil for women experiencing domestic abuse, and the square will be filled with one pair of shoes for every woman who has died.

Tracey Cownden, who has helped to organise the vigil, said: “Last November, on what felt like the coldest, snowiest day of the year, we held a small vigil to commemorate the women whose lives had been so cruelly cut short in the previous year.

“Despite the weather, so many people stopped to talk to us, and find out more about the victims that we felt we must repeat the event this year, and provide more information about where any woman currently experiencing abuse could go to seek help”.
