Coventry water polo star Amelie reaches latest milestone in promising career

Coventry Editorial 3rd Jan, 2024   0

COVENTRY’S teenage water polo star Amelie Perkins has had a brilliant start to 2024 after being selected to represent Great Britain at the senior European Championships.

Earlsdon ace Amelie has flown out to Eindhoven with the rest of her team and will be starting her campaign on Friday.

The 16-year-old only represented her country at under 17 level at the junior European Championships six months ago but her performances have seen her earn a place in the senior squad.

Great Britain has been drawn in Group D in the 16-team tournament and will take on Germany, Slovakia and Bulgaria as they bid to qualify for the next stage.

Should they make it out of the group, Amelie and her teammates could face the likes of 2020 Olympic silver medallist Spain or reigning World Champions the Netherlands in the later stages.

Last month, Amelie battled back from a ruptured tendon in her thumb to finish as the tournament’s top-scorer as she helped the Great Britain under-19s side to Bronze at the Senior Women’s EU Nations Cup.

As well as her international commitments, Amelie plays for Coventry’s water polo squad and a ladies’ national league team in Cheltenham.

Her dad Troy said Amelie being selected for the senior team at her age, and so soon after representing the under-17s, was an unbelievable achievement.
