Coventry woman braving Snowdon trek to help city youngster Effie walk

A COVENTRY woman will be braving a Snowdon hike to raise vital funds to help her friend’s four-year-old daughter achieve her dream of walking.

Kimberley Heath and her friend Jordan Allsop will be taking on the trek to raise funds for city youngster Effie Middleton to buy her own Innowalk.

Effie has triplegic cerebral palsy which affects both her lower and upper left limbs and leaves her unable to walk or stand up without an aid.

The youngster also has poor blood circulation and digestion and struggles to sleep.

She was temporarily handed a life-changing Innowalk which has allowed her to complete daily exercise, walk around and build up her muscles and strength.

After seeing the impact the Innowalk has had on her daughter’s life, her mum Ellena started a campaign to raise £33,000 to buy Effie one of her own, with £15,000 raised so far.

Kimberley has been friends with Effie’s mum, Ellena, since school.

Kimberley said: “Everyone who knows me knows I hate exercise – I hate even walking from pub to pub on a night out.

“Climbing a mountain is a big deal for me and there are very few people I would be willing to do this for, but I wanted to do something to help Effie.”

Last month, Ellena and her partner Ben Harris braved a 24-hour 100K trek from Putney Bridge to Henley-on-Thames to help towards the total.

Previous fund-raising challenges included a danceathon at Effie’s nursery Cheylesmore Pre-School and donations from friends, family and well-wishers.

Mum Ellena added: “Effie adored the Innowalk – I could barely get her out of it.

“She is a typical little girl who likes doing all the things that most girls of her age enjoy, singing, dancing, role-playing, messing around with toys.

“An Innowalk would dramatically improve her independence and quality of life and we are really grateful for any support people can give in helping us buy one for her.”
