COVENTRY women has been on a mission throughout March, walking 5 kilometers each day rain or shine to support the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty).

Her efforts aim to raise both cash and awareness for the NSPCC’s advice line for adults.

Carla Marlin from Coventry – a dedicated charity helpline practitioner based in Birmingham – has been part of the NSPCC team in Birmingham since January last year.

In her role, she handles a multitude of issues daily, ranging from child sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence to mental health and school-related problems.

Completing her challenge on Sunday, March 31, Carla will have covered 155 kilometers within a single month.

The cash she raised will contribute directly to the NSPCC Helpline, providing essential support to any adult with concerns about a child.

Carla, said: “Having to walk 5K everyday isn’t always convenient, especially when you’ve had a busy day with so much to do, and then the time reaches 9.00pm or 10.00pm in the evening and I still need to go for my walk.

“But this compared to the challenges faced by many of the children and families we help day-to-day would be a luxury.

“Working for the Helpline is both rewarding and challenging; some days are easier than others and we all support each other in the team. “The daily exercise has made me feel better mentally and I enjoy doing something positive for a great cause.

Throughout her journey, Carla has received support from her 19-year-old son, Charlie and has joined forces with three NSPCC Helpline colleagues based in Belfast.

Together, the four colleagues aim to cover a combined total of 620 kilometers by the end of their challenges.

Caroline Morgan, supporter fundraising manager for the Midlands, said: “We’re really proud of Carla for taking on this great challenge.

“What she is doing is amazing because despite the NSPCC being a large charity, it relies on public donations for the majority of its income.

“It costs the NSPCC £5 to answer each call to the Helpline. It is crucial that we keep this essential service going.”
