CAN Panto to save the planet? Oh yes it can, says Coventry’s Extinction Rebellion group!

You may associate the global environment movement with climate emergency eco protests and civil disobedience.

But yesterday (Sunday December 13) members of the group dressed up in brightly-coloured recycled costumes made by a local artist to stage Alice Saves the Planet from Big Oil at Coventry’s War Memorial Park.

Performing their very own 15-minute outdoor festive pantomime with a climate emergency message, the cast mimed to a pre-recorded soundtrack so they could remain socially-distanced. The storyline featured Alice in Wonderland-inspired characters who save their friends Plant and Bee from the dangers of pollution.

The villains of the piece, Shmell, Queen of Fossil Fools together and PR sidekick Max Profits eventually learn the error of their ways when Alice and Max accidentally get contaminated by the Big Oil company’s greenwash.

Tariq Muhammed, who played Bee, said: “I think protecting nature is very important and we need to stop the big companies from polluting.”

The Coventry group hope to will perform the panto again for more families to enjoy and spread their message in a fun, festive and social-distanced way. Follow @XRcoventry on social media for news of small-group opportunities to watch outdoor performances.
