Coventry’s schoolchildren remember the fallen

GROUPS of primary schoolchildren met in Coventry’s War Memorial Park this week to take part in a Remembrance Service organised by Coventry City Council’s Visitor Experience Team to remember all those lost in conflict around the world including the first and second World Wars.

The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth, Lord Bishop of Coventry led the service with children from St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary School, Manor Park Primary School, All Souls’ Catholic Primary School, Stivichall Primary School, Hollyfast Primary School, Finham Primary School and Coventry’s Young Ambassadors all doing their own readings throughout the service.

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Coun John McNicholas spoke of his pride seeing the young people embracing the city’s worldwide message of peace and also giving thanks to those who sacrificed so much for us.

He said: “These children all reflect the message of peace the city is famous for.

“I’m sure everyone attending felt the understanding and feeling in the readings written by the children and believe the future can be a better place as these children grow and spread the city’s messages of peace and reconciliation.”

The service was also addressed by the Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Les Ratcliffe MBE TD DL, who spoke of his honour being at the service as the Queen’s representative for this moving ceremony.

He said: “It’s been really good to listen to the children’s readings, about the two World Wars in particular, and for those who lost their lives and how they are remembered here in the War Memorial Park in Coventry”

The Exhortation, Last Post and two-minute silence were followed by wreath laying, playing of the National Anthem and closed with the Kohima.
