A RESEARCHING duo from Coventry’s University Hospital have been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
Christopher Poole, Professor of Medical Oncology and Dr Jane Worlding, a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, have been shortlisted in the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Industry Principal Investigator Awards.
Professor Poole was shortlisted after exceeding recruitment targets for clinical studies run by UHCW, including a study into a drug combination for ovarian cancer.
Describing his delight and surprise at being shortlisted, Professor Poole said: “It’s important that we are able to offer patients the opportunity to participate in clinical studies, and the only way that we are able to do this is through teamwork.
“And of course, it’s only through clinical studies that we are able to develop better treatments for the future.”
Dr Worlding was shortlisted for successfully delivering a study into a therapy for patients with bone cancer.
She said: “I was thrilled to hear that my study had been shortlisted.
“The study for metastatic prostate cancer patients with a novel radioisotope added to a standard treatment is very exciting.
“This treatment may eventually be valuable to a large number of patients whose cancer has travelled to their bones.”
Professor Poole and Dr Worlding are among nine clinical researchers in the region to be shortlisted.
The results will be announced at an awards ceremony on February 19 in London.
