As the festive season blankets Coventry with twinkling lights and frosty mornings, one cherished tradition stands out among the celebrations: the city’s Vintage Sleigh Ride.
Nestled in the Transport Museum, this enchanting experience captures the spirit of Christmas with a dash of nostalgia and a sleigh-load of holiday cheer.
Coventry’s Vintage Sleigh Ride isn’t just a seasonal attraction; it’s a time machine – originating in the 1950s, the ride was first introduced as a way to bring the North Pole to Coventry, delighting children and families.
The sleigh itself is a meticulously restored treasure, its wooden frame with intricate carvings and hand-painted scenes of wintry wonders.
Visitors begin their journey at Santa’s Workshop, where cheerful elves greet them with warm smiles and festive tunes.

Once aboard the sleigh, riders are whisked away on a winding path through a winter wonderland.
Where once there were dozens of sleigh rides, it is believed as little as three remain, with only one being fully functional – the one in Coventry.
Rob Hubbard who in recent years has overseen the efforts to keep the much-loved sleigh in tip top condition, said: “I’m 62 now and I remember riding the sleigh myself as a kid, it was something to look forward to at the Co-Op every year.
“Because of the movements of the horses, the curtains and the sleigh itself, it genuinely gives the illusion it is moving.
“Kids absolutely love it and every year it creates miles of smiles.
“To know the work we do can create a bit of magic for the kids is so special. It’s a lot of work every year but I love it.”
Rob said it is a beautiful kit to look at and he enjoys keeping on top of it.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, Coventry’s Vintage Sleigh Ride is a place where the magic of Christmas comes alive, where families can create memories that last a lifetime, and where the spirit of togetherness shines brightest.
