Coventry's women's research group help charity as it disbands

Coventry Editorial 24th Apr, 2023   0

A GROUP set up to promote women’s history in Coventry is to disband after 25 years.

The women’s research group was set up in 1998 as founding members felt women’s history had been neglected over the years.

The group, initially connected to Coventry University, aimed to produce a book showcasing women who had contributed to the city’s history in the 20th Century.

Instead they wrote several, the last one being 2016’s ‘Sent to Coventry’.

Their many works have included books that covered the war, places of interest in Coventry, shops and factories that no longer exist and events in the city.

“We all love our history and used to go to conduct interviews with people to learn more about their stories,” said the group’s chair Christine Marsh.

“We very rarely get to hear the experiences of everyday people so it was extremely interesting to us.”

The group held their final official meeting on Thursday and will be holding a celebration event on May 22 from around 10.30am at the city centre library.

At the special event, they will be donating the £5,000 they have remaining in their account to charities including Myton Hospice and Parkinson’s UK’s Warwickshire branch.

There will also be a short presentation reflecting on the group’s achievements and refreshments will be available afterwards.
