Dog owners taken to court and fined for incorrect microchip details, says Coventry council

TWO dog owners have been fined for not keeping their dogs’ microchip details up to date – after their pets were found as strays, Coventry City Council says.

The dogs had to be taken to the kennels.

Council animal welfare officers found the dogs were microchipped, but the details were incorrect.

The case ended up in court on May 24 after the owners – once identified – were contacted but failed to respond within 28 days to give updated details.

Julie Chatterway, aged 41, of Sherrington Avenue, appeared on a charge of non-compliance with a microchipping notice – failing to update details on her dog’s microchip.

She pleaded guilty by post and was fined £240, ordered to pay costs of £255.75 and a Victim Surcharge of £30.

In another case, Jennifer Wells, aged 35, of St Luke’s Road, faced the same charge.

The case was proved in her absence and she was fined £440, ordered to pay costs of £255.75 and a Victim Surcharge of £44.

A council spokesperson said: “Microchipping of dogs and ensuring the owner’s details are kept up to date are essential in quickly identifying the owner of the stray dog, reuniting the, and minimising the costs to the public purse.”
