A DRIVER is to stand trial later this year over the death of a two-year-old boy after he and his mother were hit by a car in Coventry.
Little Umar Akhalwaya and his 32-year-old mother Hawa Akhalwaya were severely injured in the collision in Stoney Stanton Road on April 8 last year.
They had been hit by a VW Bora as they made their way home from visiting family at around 9pm, but Mrs Akhalwaya’s other three children escaped injury.
The two of them were rushed by ambulance to hospital, but the toddler died shortly afterwards.
Bora driver Mohmood Abid pleaded not guilty at Warwick Crown Court to causing Umar’s death by dangerous driving and to an alternative charge of causing death by driving while uninsured.
Abid (40) of Webster Street, Foleshill, Coventry, also denied causing serious injury to Hawa Akhalwaya by dangerous driving.
The case was adjourned for trial, which is expected to take place at the court in August, and Abid was granted bail.
