A NEW scheme to help the environment by recycling jeans and other denim items is being launched by award-winning Coventry youth group Fridays.

‘Drop The Denim’ will get under way with a fashion show at West Orchards Shopping Centre between 1pm and 4pm next Friday, June 3.

The group – which will be running the scheme for 12 months – sprung into action after the startling revelation that it takes 1,800 gallons of water just to make one pair of jeans.

New and worn jeans will be washed and recycled by giving them to families in need throughout Coventry.

‘Drop The Denim’ has been given £50,000 funding by the National Lottery as part of grants it is handing out to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

This will enable the installation of 15 industrial sized ‘Denim Drop Banks’ across the city and arrange transport to pick up the jeans and distribute them throughout the community.

The young people at Fridays will provide regular updates on their website, including the number of items donates and the amount of water saved by people’s donations.
