A DRUG dealer who shot himself in the leg as he tried to escape police in a vehicle stolen in Coventry has been jailed.
Keanu Denzil Spencer, 24, of no fixed address, appeared at Leicester Crown Court yesterday (December 19), where he was sentenced to a total of eight years and four months imprisonment.
He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, handling stolen goods and two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.
At around 10.50pm on October 22, Leicestershire Police acting on shared intelligence attended a property in Leicester with the intention to find Spencer who was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
When Spencer saw police arriving at the address he ran towards a white VW Golf which he’d earlier parked in Equity Road, Leicester.
The car had been stolen from an address in Coventry on October 19.
As he tried to get into the car he discharged his firearm, injuring himself in the leg.
Police attempted to detain him but he broke free. But police caught up with him and he was arrested.
A search of the vehicle recovered a quantity of Class A drugs.
Detective constable Steve Winterton said: “Spencer committed a serious offence when he openly carried a firearm in a residential area without caring about the danger his actions could cause to others.
“We hope the outcome of this case and today’s sentencing will reassure the local community who were affected by the incident that justice has been done.
“Spencer now faces a considerable amount of time in prison to reflect on his decision that night to carry a firearm in a public place.”
