EDITOR’S COMMENT
Slow but important progress is being made in our Bring George Eliot Home campaign.
After months of us challenging matters first highlighted by the George Eliot Fellowship, it has emerged council planning and conservation officers have seemingly been getting serious.
The owners of the great writer’s 1840s home – Grade 11* listed since 1974, have been told to restore its historic character.
The Bangladesh Centre, owners of Bird Grove since 2003, are now private liaising with councillors to see if grants can be accessed.
The owners will need support and we urge a collaborative effort.
Meanwhile, some return to public access for tourists and George Eliot-related activities should surely be straightforward.
