THE city has welcomed news of a £8.5million government grant for Coventry’s arts ahead of UK City of Culture 2021.
While the amount is similar to Coventrians’ monies so far committed by the council, it demonstrates tangibly how the city is already benefiting in inward investment from City of Culture status.
The grants will see refurbishment of Belgrade Theatre (subject to conditions), and investment in the Herbert art gallery, Coventry Cathedral, St Mary’s Guildhall and Drapers’ Hall.
It follows news last week of a £5million Arts Council for the City of Culture campaign and more than £370,000 to help make the Herbert more energy efficient.
Bring on the celebrations!
