THE media, politicians and PR people can often over-emphasise the value of money, and quantify success in pounds and pence.
Yes, any inward investment will be very welcome. But you cannot put a price on the real value of Coventry winning UK City of Culture 2021.
For many of us, not all, whose lived experience has been shaped by this city, it goes straight to the heart.
A city stigmatised and undervalued, despite its rich history, contributions and culture.
Or, more accurately, it cultures (plural), stemming from its people’s diversity, struggles, labour, creativity, tenacity, loves, joys and pain.
It is history and culture from below, not above. It’s not about the ‘great and good’.
It’s about the city’s pride, confidence, and self-image.
A city, and its people who now have a greater opportunity to shine in the spotlight.
There is much more to do in this city. We in the media must continue to contribute to the city’s culture with both championing and scrutinising journalism.
But today, let’s celebrate, and thank ALL those who’ve contributed to this magnificent achievement.
