EDITOR'S COMMENT: Praise due for council's initial response to our Bring George Eliot Home campaign

Coventry Editorial 27th Oct, 2017   0

Leading Labour councillor Linda Bigham deserves praise for her initial response to our Bring George Eliot Home campaign.

We are backing the George Eliot Fellowship’s call on Coventry to make more of the boarded-up listed Bird Grove House, where one of the world’s greatest authors lived in her formative years. She should also be more celebrated in the city centre, for international visitors and future generations.

Coun Bigham has now committed to exploring with the Fellowship ‘options to maintain George Eliot’s legacy’, including potentially bringing the house back to life.

We will monitor developments. Time is pressing, with the 200th anniversary of her birth in 2019 and Coventry hoping to win City of Culture 2021.
