Event celebrating Jewish migrants role in Coventry's watchmaking history tomorrow

Coventry Editorial 17th Mar, 2023   0

A FREE event telling the story of how Jewish migrants fleeing persecution contributed to the city’s watchmaking industry will takes place this Saturday, March 18 at the Friends Meeting House.

The event will start at 2.30pm and will feature a short film screening, book launch and live storytelling.

Coventry was one of only three places in the country which took part in watchmaking, with many made in what was known as a ‘Top shop’ in Spon End or Chapel Fields.

The Jewish watchmakers made Coventry their home and their hidden history from the turn of the late 20th century has been made into a short film after research from Mark Johnson.

A spokesperson for event organisers Stamp Productions said: “The Jewish watchmakers’ story is typical of so many million stories of migration to these isles and yet as unique as every human story ever is.

“We are a nation born of multitudes of peoples, from the Romans to our latest wave of visitors from war-torn Ukraine and so many others from conflicts that are no longer news.

“This will share these and other stories as a testament to those who come to Coventry – without their skills and entrepreneurial zest our country would not be the place it is today.”
