‘EXCEPTIONAL’ students at a Coventry academy have been praised for their contributions to Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) sustainability efforts.

WMG Coventry Academy sixth form students Jignesh Bosamia, Nelly Rejek and Lauren Taylor created, recorded and filmed a sustainability-focused video for the company.

To thank the students, the Senior Sustainability JLR team – Neil Hewitt, Christine Smith and Sally Baker – and Kate Ambrosi, the Chief Executive Officer for Baker Dearing Educational Trust, visited the academy and toured its state-of-the-art engineering hall and teaching facilities.

The highlight of the visit was a special assembly where the students showcased the video they created with the team from JLR.

This was followed by a Q&A session with the aspiring young engineering students, giving them the opportunity to learn from the team’s wealth of knowledge and experience.

Kate Ambrosi, Chief Executive Officer of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, said: “Nelly, Jignesh and Lauren ought to be extremely proud of their work on that video. It perfectly demonstrates how University Technical Colleges (UTC) students and alumni can help further organisational goals, such as the net zero transition.

“This sort of partnership, between a UTC delivering high quality technical education and a highly-engaged and sector-leading employer such as JLR, is what the UTC programme’s success is built on.”

Stewart Tait, Chief Executive Officer of WMG Academy Trust, said: “Our education pathways of today are preparing students for the careers of tomorrow, and JLR are at the forefront of the latest and emerging technologies. Hence we are privileged that they share a vision with students that will help create a global sustainable future.

“We are immensely proud of the contributions made by Nelly, Jignesh and Lauren to the JLR Global sustainability launch.”

Adele Wallis, Associate Principal at WMG Academy Coventry, said: “It is events and opportunities like this that make my job so rewarding. This encompasses what UTCs are about, bringing education and the world of work together.”

Andrew Kyprianou, Director of Engineering at WMG Academy, added: “Engaging with world class industry partners, such as JLR is vitally important to inspire our students and enrich their curriculum experience. Opportunities such as this highlights the range of career pathways within engineering and the vital importance JLR places on sustainability and engaging with the next generation in raising their career aspirations.”

Alison Nuttall, JLR Senior Sustainability Manager, who spent over a decade in product engineering before setting up JLR’s sustainability operations team, said: “The world of tomorrow will be shaped by the generation in school today and so it is vital that organisations listen to the experiences and views of young people, and act in the interests of their futures.

“The students at WMG helped us to explain that idea to our colleagues at JLR and we are grateful for that input.”
