BARCLAYS is laying off 248 employees based at its site on the Westwood Business Park.

Staff from the banking giant’s Customer Payments Solution, Digital and Social Media teams – including 63 members of staff on temporary contracts – have been told they will be out of jobs by December 31 this year.

This morning (Tuesday), staff were taken by bus from their offices to the Best Western Plus Windmill Village Hotel off the A45 to be delivered the devastating news.

The move comes as Barclays’ efforts to streamlines the departments, which are currently run from three sites across the country – Coventry, Sunderland and Liverpool.

In the future the company’s Customer Payments Solution, Digital and Social Media teams will only operated from its Sunderland and Liverpool sites.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “Barclays continually seeks ways to improve customer service and improve the efficiency of our business.

“Currently our Customer Payments Solution, Digital and Social Media teams work across three sites in the UK and we have taken the strategic decision to manage the majority of this work from two sites in the future.

“Regrettably, this will mean that a number of roles will fall away in Coventry, and so we are working closely with our colleagues impacted, to help them through this process and secure alternative roles where possible.

“We have approximately 1,500 staff who currently work at Westwood Park in Coventry which remains a key location for a number of our operations.”
