OVER 700 pupils and teachers from across Coventry gathered at the University of Warwick for the grand finale of the Flame of Friendship project.
The event, hosted at the University’s Sports and Wellness Hub, united 63 schools in a vibrant and colorful parade inspired by the upcoming Paris Olympics, featuring a flash-mob style performance of an Olympic-themed dance choreographed by the Royal Opera House.
A custom-made Olympic-style torch, designed through a competition involving over 2,000 children, was a highlight of the event.
The winning design from Finham Park School was brought to life by the team at WMG and T Level students from Rugby College.
This torch symbolised the collaborative spirit of the project, having traveled across 63 schools since its journey began at Coventry Cathedral in February.
Kerry Baker, assistant director at the Warwick Institute of Engagement, said: “This project has all been about sharing the spirit of the Olympics; international relationships, and sharing culture and ideas, all coming together in a wonderful display of regional collaboration.
“Working with the local schools has been a joy and to see it come together for today’s finale event is brilliant.”
The grand finale event featured a lively performance followed by a parade of over 700 attendees at the Sports and Wellness Hub for the closing ceremony.
Speeches were delivered by the Mayor of Coventry, the Leader of Coventry City Council, and Pro-Vice Chancellor Michael Scott.
