EARLSDON councillor Ant Tucker and Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana led a food collection drive to combat ‘holiday hunger’ in the area ahead of the summer school break.
Councillors and volunteers collected food from people in Styvechale before delivering them to the charity Sewa Day as part of its Coventry School Hamper campaign.
The charity provides food hampers to families in need during the summer holiday.
The collection went towards 50 food parcels delivered by Sewa Day to six Coventry schools.
A recent study by the end child poverty coalition showed 8,184 children were living in poverty in Coventry South.
Ms Sultana said: “In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it’s an absolute travesty that 4.2 million children are living in poverty.
“We can’t just wait around for political change to tackle that injustice, we have to take action now.
“That’s why it was so good to team up with Sewa Day for their Coventry School Hamper campaign.”
