Friday's Coventry save over 2 million gallons of water through drop the denim scheme

AWARD-WINNING youth group Friday’s Coventry is celebrating yet more success after giving away over 1,133 denim items to people in need while helping the environment.

The group sprung into action after the startling revelation that it takes 1,800 gallons of water just to make one pair of jeans, meaning water usage can be hugely cut by recycling denim.

The group’s incredible work has saved 2,039,400 gallons of water from the donated denim.

New and worn jeans are washed and recycled by giving them to families in need throughout Coventry.

The year-long scheme was launched last June and has gone on to receive support from the likes of Coventry City Football Club.

Denim has been handed out at the group’s food distribution sessions every Saturday morning at Coventry Central Methodist Hall.

The group has also linked up with family hubs across Coventry to help children and families through the project, as well as other groups in need.

The project’s operational lead Narelle Gordon said: “So far the scheme has been brilliant, we have denim bin locations across Coventry, the support has been brilliant and we have been able to help so many people.”
