TWO Coventry schools have been awarded a £15,000 grant to promote robotics education for students in the city.
Earlsdon primary and King Henry VIII schools have developed an open-access robotics hub that all schools in Coventry can use.
To enable them to teach robotics, school staff will be offered free professional development sessions, and they will also be able to bring classes and robotics clubs for sessions.
Schools will also be able to compete in robotics competitions, with the first local VEX robotics league.
The two schools have been awarded the cash through the engineering education grant scheme, which supports British educational projects that increase engineering knowledge for young people.
The scheme, which is run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, aims to engage youngsters aged between four and 19 to learn about engineering and develop the skills of those involved.
It also supports Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning and career awareness.
Coventry City Councils’ cabinet member for education and skills, Coun Dr Kindy Sandhu, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “This is a wonderful new scheme available for our city schools to use.
“It was only until I was at university that I studied robotics and so I am sure many students and staff are hugely excited to try the new facilities on offer.
“The new Robotics Hub will create a very stimulating environment to learn in and help pupils become fantastic engineers of the future.
“I want to thank all of those involved in this brilliant project and look forward to all the opportunities that it will bring.”
