COVENTRY Rugby Club coaches put on Commonwealth Games-related activities during the summer break as part of a scheme to help struggling children and their families over the school holidays.
The club teamed up with Charter Savings Bank to support local communities during the school holidays through the Project:500 scheme.
The scheme operates every school holiday, giving Coventry children the chance to take part in multi-sport activities at camps as well as having access to meals, snacks, drinks and a food hamper to take home in a bid to tackle hunger.
Children entitled to benefits-related free school meals are able to take part in Project:500 camps.
According to the 2019 English Indices of Deprivation, 14 per cent of Coventry neighbourhoods are in the top 10 per cent most deprived in England.
Coventry Rugby’s community outreach manager Richard Meacham said: “The club has been providing community support since 2019 and Project:500 has become such a lifeline to some families.
“We’ve felt so proud the Commonwealth Games have been held across this region and it has helped us to instill into the young people accessing this project that they can do whatever they want in life and that there should be no barriers to where they want to go.”
