THE GMB union maintained its claim Amazon workers were making history as they took industrial action at the firm’s distribution centre.
Union members say workers were walking out after being offered a ‘disgraceful’ 50p pay rise.
More than 450 staff at the West Midland fulfilment centre will continue their action until Friday (March 17).
The Amazon Coventry staff became the first in the UK to take strike action against the firm with GMB union members also walking out for two days earlier this month.
The GMB estimates the strikes will cost Amazon more than £2million.
Amanda Gearing, GMB Senior Organiser, said the ‘unprecedented’ week-long strike showed workers’ anger, adding it was ‘crunch time for Amazon top brass’.
“They work for one of the richest companies in the world, yet they have to work round the clock to keep themselves afloat,” she said.
“It’s sickening Amazon workers in Coventry will earn just 8p above the national minimum wage in April 2023.”
An Amazon spokesperson said: “A tiny proportion of our workforce is involved. In fact, according to the verified figures, only a fraction of one per cent of our UK employees voted in the ballot – and that includes those who voted against industrial action.
“We appreciate the great work our teams do throughout the year and we’re proud to offer competitive pay which starts at a minimum of between £10.50 and £11.45 per hour, depending on location.”
The firm said it represented a 29 per cent increase in the minimum hourly wage paid to Amazon employees since 2018.
And they added staff were offered comprehensive benefits – including private medical insurance, life assurance, subsidised meals and an employee discount – worth thousands more.
