Help Coventry scouts get to world jamboree by donating to woodland

Coventry Editorial 19th Apr, 2023   0

YOUNG Coventrians looking to fund-raise to go to the World Scout Jamboree this summer have been given permission to renovate an area of a campsite to leave a ‘lasting legacy’ and help them meet their total.

The group of 18 scouts aged between 13 and 17 have been selected to attend the event in South Korea but need to raise £80,000 to make this possible.

Recently, an area of the Rough Close Scout Campsite and Activity Centre, which the youngsters have named Jamboree Wood, has been handed over to the group to regenerate by planting a mixed broadleaf plantation.

Scout members and their families have put 240 oak, rowan, silver birch, downy birch, crab apple, hawthorn, holly and grey willow trees donated from the Woodland Trust into an open area carpeted in bluebells.

And the scouts have now launched the Jamboree Wood project to give something back to businesses and organisations able to support them in their fund-raising.

Any person or business which wants to donate between £50 and £249 will become a ‘Friend of Jamboree Wood’ and receive a certificate, a unit badge, a thank you card and marketing support around the project.

Anyone who donates £250 or more will also receive a hand-carved sign in Jamboree Wood and an invitation to the unveiling ceremony in July.

The Coventry Scouts are now within touching distance of their £80,000 target, with previous efforts including charity car washes, helping at Christmas events and family race nights.

This summer’s World Scout Jamboree will see around 40,000 young people from around the globe taking part.

The cash raised will go towards training camps to prepare for the jamboree, uniforms and kit.

It will also go towards funding other scouts from less fortunate countries to allow them to attend.

The Jamboree aims to bring youngsters together to take action on issues including peace, sustainability and equality and shows them how they can make a difference.
