Historical peace walk aims to unite Coventry on 100th anniversary of First World War

A HISTORICAL walk aims to unite Coventry for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The event billed as a ‘PeaceTwalk’ invites people to War Memorial Park to walk and talk with strangers, hoping it will promote harmony between communities in the city.

It will mark the centenary of Armistice day on November 11 and will feature a tour of the park’s heritage sites, explaining their history and stimulating conversations.

Coventry’s United Nations Association (CUNA) is a source of independent analysis on the UN, and a UK-wide grassroots movement.

It says the PeaceTwalk is a world first and will showcase one of Coventry’s key historical sites after its transformation into a recognised city of peace and reconciliation.

The event is part of Coventry Peace Festival and the city’s universities will run the event in partnership with the CUNA.

Organisers are encouraging walkers to meet at 1pm near the bus shelter in Coventry Park and Ride on Kenilworth Road.

Secretary of CUNA Philip Brown said: “Coventry has been a world-leader in building peace and reconciliation between nations since the bombing of the Second World War.

“We call it a PeaceTwalk because we will build peaceful relations as we walk and talk together. We hope people will take some photos or record videos and upload to social media to spread the idea using the hashtag #peacetwalk.

“The walk will visit ten different peace-related locations within the park and the students will describe their history and ask questions to stimulate conversation as they walk to the next location. It’s a very simple idea but has never been done before.”

Walkers should go to the Park and Ride entrance on 36 Kenilworth Road, Coventry, CV3 6PG.

Buses 12X, 18A, 40, 45, 87, 89, U17 and X17 either stop here or nearby.
