How the future Coventry City of Culture 2021 could look

Coventry Editorial 2nd Oct, 2019 Updated: 2nd Oct, 2019   0

THIS is how Coventry could look when it is City of Culture in 2021, according to new artist impressions released by the city council.

CGI images featured in a Transforming the City presentation currently touring the city include greener public spaces and visually appealing walkways.

There are fountains and water features with wide raised flower beds in Upper Precinct; public art sculptures and raised flower beds incorporating seating in Market Way and Smithford Way.

Outside The Wave waterpark and the Bull Yard there is a greater focus on green landscaping with public art sculptures and circular brick seating areas. There is also a future projection of the area around the former Coventry Telegraph building in Corporation Street once it is transformed into a luxe £120 million boutique hotel.

Coun Jim O’Boyle cabinet member for jobs and regeneration said: “This first look at the plans for our city centre show the true scale of the changes we have planned. We have secured over £40 million in grant funding to get this work done and we will ensure we keep the best of the old alongside the best of the new.

“This work will build on what we have already started – including re opening the link between Broadgate and Hertford Street and the work that is underway to bring down Coventry Point which will re-open the views in Market Way.

“We are still working on the detail – but we have been clear that we are planning something really top class with impressive planting, water features and new paving.

“We are also working hard to see if we can move the jewellery shop to re open the Upper Precinct back to the way it was when Donald Gibson designed the area.

“Changes in our city centre are long overdue and although I know there will be some disruption to shoppers, visitors and traders while the work is underway I think it will be worth it.”
