How to see The Lyrids meteor shower in The Midlands this weekend

Coventry Editorial 22nd Apr, 2023   0

THERE is a chance to see a meteor shower across the Midlands and the rest of the UK this weekend.

The Lyrids happen every April, boasting 18 meteors-an-hour.

The show started on April 15 and peaks now with the best time to see them being in the early hours of tomorrow morning (Sunday, April 23).

When it comes to meteor showers and shooting stars, the darker the sky the better the chance of seeing them. Currently only around 10 per cent of the moon is visible making conditions ideal, providing the sky is clear and cloud free.

The Lyrids, caused by debris from the Thatcher Comet, are visible to the naked eye. No telescope or special equipment is needed.

Experts suggest people go to dark areas, away from light pollution from cities and large towns.

Also, it can get cold so people are urged to wrap up warm and turn off lights and torches to enable their eyes to adjust to the dark.

After the early hours of tomorrow morning this year’s Lyrids display will wind down, ending around April 30.
