COVENTRY reaffirmed its support for the people of Ukraine with a poignant vigil at the Cathedral Ruins last Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
Hundreds of people joined a procession from the Lower Precinct to the Cathedral Ruins service, where they showed their support for Ukraine through song and prayer.
The service remembered those who had lost their lives through the war as well as all those who have suffered and had to flee their homeland.
Visitors were also encouraged to look forward with hope to the future.
And in a beautiful act of unity, the colours of the Ukrainian flag were projected onto the Ruins.
The service at the Ruins was led by the Very Rev David Senyk and Fr Taras Dovbeniuk from the Ukrainian Church alongside Coventry Cathedral representatives.
Coventry North West MP Taiwo Owatemi said the ‘powerful and moving’ vigil showed people across the city had made it clear they would continue to stand with Ukraine.
John Witcombe, Dean of Coventry said: “We share the regret that this anniversary has happened at all, and we are grateful to join our prayers with those across the world for an end to this terrible war.
“It is our prayer from Coventry that justice, peace and hope will prevail, and that with God’s help and in God’s name it will be possible to rebuild broken lives, cities and communities.”
