'Inspriring' new dementia hub opens in Coventry

Coventry Editorial 24th Jul, 2023   0

A NEW dementia hub will open in Coventry today (July 24) and will celebrate local heroes who have dedicated their lives to helping people living with the condition.

The Coventry Dementia Partnership Hub (CDPH), which will replace the Council-run Maymorn Centre in Holbrooks following renovation, includes new community rooms named after the local heroes.

Ahead of the opening, people were invited to a special launch where families, carers and those living with Dementia met up to take a closer look at the facilities.

The hub will allow people to access advice and support, meet new people and socialise.

Earlier this year, the CDPH asked Coventrians to nominate Coventry dementia heroes before an external panel picked four candidates to have a community room named after them.

Photos and their personal stories will also be on display in the community rooms.

A café at the hub will be open between 10.30am and 2.30pm.

David Atkins, who is part of the Alzheimer’s Society, and was diagnosed with early onset Dementia nine years ago, said: “It’s an inspiring place. It’s here for everyone who is a part of this journey.

“When I was diagnosed with Dementia, for the first two years, my life was ripped apart. It’s the fear of the unknown.

“But since then, being part of the Alzheimer’s Society and being encouraged to help create the new Hub has been so important. Everyone has embraced the idea.

“It’s great to see the hub completed – it has been a real partnership effort.”
