Jane Austen's 250th birthday to be marked in Warwickshire

REGENCY revels and a county-wide vote will celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday in Warwickshire.

Warwickshire Libraries is inviting residents to step into the world of bonnets, ballrooms, and biting wit as it celebrates the 250th anniversary of the writer’s birth.

There will be the chance to vote to crown Warwickshire’s favourite Austen novel, couple, and villain.

Warwickshire Libraries is also hosting a programme of events throughout November and December, blending literary appreciation with creative fun.

There will be regency-era performances, readings, and dancing in full period costume in collaboration with Events From History at


Kenilworth Library on Friday November 14 and Southam Library on Friday November 21.

Tickets cost £10 and dressing up is encouraged.

Free events, held at Rugby Library, include Wild About Jane Austen on Thursday November 13 – a live screening of the British Library’s special talk with complimentary scones, and quill making on Tuesday December 2.

Warwickshire County Council’s customer and localities spokesperson Coun Mike Bannister said: ”Jane Austen’s legacy continues to inspire readers across generations, and Warwickshire Libraries are proud to celebrate her 250th birthday with a programme that brings her world to life and invites people to join in and be part of it.

“From spirited debates over favourite characters to elegant Regency revels, this celebration invites everyone to rediscover the wit, wisdom, and enduring charm of Austen’s work. We encourage residents of all ages to join us in honouring one of literature’s most beloved voices.”
