COVENTRY’S University Hospital has opened a new modernised waiting room and five new cubicles as part of a £15million emergency department expansion project.
The new waiting area will be more easily accessible and will feature improved temperature control systems, while a new microphone system and service updates will improve communications between staff and patients.
The new cubicles will be larger and have wider access points.
The development marks the end of the third phase of works at University Hospital, and follows the opening of a new Minor Injuries Unit next to the main entrance at the site.
The next phase, which is due to be completed in May, will focus on enhancing the resuscitation area by adding more patient treatment cubicles.
In addition, self-contained cubicles will be developed to treat patients with suspected infectious diseases to make sure people are kept safe.
Ed Hartley, Clinical Director and Consultant of Emergency Medicine, said: “The completion of phase three of the emergency department expansion project is a real milestone for the Trust and it’s a great way for us to round up the first year of activity.
“As part of the enhancements in the treatment rooms there will be a ‘quiet room’ to support patients in mental health crisis and more room for patients with accessibility issues to manoeuvre.”
