A LIFETIME cyclist from Coventry has become a cycling ambassador for the UK’s largest and oldest children’s charity.
Mick Ives will be working closely with Barnardo’s following 60 years of competitive cycling across the world, something no other British rider has achieved.
The grandfather – who later this year will complete the Giro D’Italia route while raising funds for three charities – has competed against some of the world’s best riders and won 79 British Cycling championships.
Ives is hoping his latest fundraising event in Italy can raise £60,000 – £1,000 for each year he has been involved in the sport.
The 77-year-old will complete the 3,400km challenge in May. And he said he’s ecstatic to be announced as Barnardo’s cycling ambassador.
He said: “I hope the money I raise for this amazing charity will help to transform the lives of the most vulnerable children and help them to believe in and follow their dreams.
Barnardo’s Chief Executive, Javed Khan, said: “I am delighted Mike Ives has become Barnardo’s cycling ambassador.
“He is a fantastic role model for the sport and shows what can be achieved regardless of your age or circumstances.
“We wish him all the best for his upcoming event.”
In his role of cycling ambassador, Mike will also be supporting Barnardo’s cyclists taking on the Prudential Ride London event in July.
