Legendary Coventry poet Philip Larkin honoured with plaque

Coventry Editorial 16th Dec, 2022   0

LEGENDARY Coventry poet Philip Larkin has been honoured with a commemorative plaque on the house he was born in to mark the 37th anniversary of his passing.

The plaque was commissioned by the Coventry Society and was formally unveiled by the city’s Lord Mayor Coun Kevin Maton.

Larkin, acknowledged as the greatest English poet from the latter half of the 20th century, was born at 2 Poulteney Road in Radford on August 9, 1922.

Many tributes have been paid to Larkin this year to mark what would have been his 100th birthday.

On the same day as the plaque unveiling, a wreath was laid on the stone dedicated to him in Westminster Abbey.

The Philip Larkin Society made a cash donation towards the cost of the plaque and Coventry’s poet laureate Emilie Lauren Jones attended to pay her own tribute to Larkin, writing a poem in response to his famous ‘I Remember, I Remember’ poem.

Peter Walters, Chair of the Coventry Society, said: “I’ve long felt in Coventry we do not do enough to celebrate Philip Larkin and his genius, and this plaque is just another small step towards making that happen.”
